Assorted nerdery by Rick Marshall

Welcome to Geek By Association

I’m Rick Marshall. Over the last few decades, I’ve made a career out of learning about things that fascinate me. (It’s a pretty sweet gig.)

Whether it’s movies, comic books, video games, TV, sports, or even politics and the social issues that shape our lives, I’ve explored a wide range of subjects through my work for various print, broadcast, and online media outlets.

It’s been a long time since I had my own outlet, though — a place where I can discuss what I’m watching, playing, reading, or working on, not because it’s my job, but because I’m just, well… excited about it.

That’s where Geek By Association comes in…

What’s a Geek By Association?

That’s a great question! I’m glad you asked.

Years ago, I was invited to discuss some high-profile news from the world of comic books on a popular morning television show. Before I stepped in front of the camera, the show’s producer asked me how I’d like to be introduced. I rattled off the long list of titles I’ve held, then jokingly added, “I’m basically a professional geek.”

A few seconds later, that’s exactly how I was introduced: “Rick Marshall, Professional Geek.”

The title was an accident, but it was a happy one. Being called a “Professional Geek” grew on me over the years, even as the niche interests that inspired it became increasingly mainstream. These days, everyone wants to talk about the latest sci-fi, fantasy, or superhero stories they’re watching, reading, or playing, and “geeking out” about those fictional worlds has become as normal as talking about the weather.

I know I’ve been fortunate to earn a living writing and talking about many of these people and projects that fascinate us, and with Geek By Association, I’d like to continue that conversation.

I hope you’ll join me.
